This four-volume Encyclopedia of Global Studies was published in 2012 by Sage Publications and distributed worldwide. It is the first encyclopedia of its kind, and will become the internationally-recognized reference work for academics, policymakers, and practitioners interested in the various dimensions of globalization. The growing field of Global Studies has generated a wealth of new information and knowledge. The time has come for a basic reference work that takes stock of current knowledge and provides succinct summaries of concepts and theories, definitions of terms, biographical entries, and organizational profiles; offers a guide to sources of information, and establishes an overview of Global Studies in different parts of the world and across cultures and historical periods.  The wide range of subjects covered by Encyclopedia of Global Studies include the following:

– intellectual approaches, such as global sociology, political economy, world systems theory, peace and conflict studies, and communications

global and transnational topics, such as cross-border conflicts and terrorism, worldwide health crises and climate disruption, the planetary immigration patterns and new cultural diasporas, and the seemingly boundless global market, rapid communications, and transnational cyberspaces devised by technology and new media

AN EDITORIAL BOARD consisting of international experts in the economic, political, social, and cultural forms of globalization assured that the major areas are covered and the most reputable scholars invited to contribute to the volumes.

AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE made up of the directors of the leading programs and centers of global studies around the world helped shape the contents of the volume and provided contacts for authors from their own and related institutions.

THE EDITORS-IN-CHIEF are leading figures in the emerging field of global studies: Mark Juergensmeyer, director of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Helmut Anheier, director of the Center for Civil Society / Globalization and Policy Research at UCLA and professor of Sociology at Heidelberg University.

THE MANAGING EDITOR is Victor Faessel, Ph.D., program director of the Orfalea Center at UC-Santa Barbara.
