Peter Haslund

Haslund started teaching at Santa Barbara City College in the fall of 1969 and earned a Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara in Political Science in 1975.  During his 40-year career at SBCC, he served as Chair of the Political Science/Economics Department, Chair of the Social Science Division, and President of the Academic Senate. Convinced that a comprehensive understanding of international affairs could only be achieved through an interdisciplinary approach, Dr. Haslund established the college’s “International Studies” program in 1987. A decade later, this major was transformed into the current Global and International Studies program with a Global Studies major.

In 1984, Professor Haslund was selected as a Fulbright Scholar, spending time at Shandong University in China researching approaches to mass communications as related to Deng Xiaoping’s “Four Mondernizations” program.  He returned the following year to establish SBCC’s Study Abroad program in China -- a first for any community college.  In 1990, he did the same in the Soviet Union, bringing students to Kiev State University in Ukraine.  He returned to China in 1992 with yet another group of students and continued this practice every other year until retirement.  In 1996, the China program was expanded to include a month in Hanoi, Vietnam.
