Critical Security Studies Lunch with Prof. Omar Dahi

January 29 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

THIS WEDNESDAY, January 29, from 1-3pm, the Orfalea Center will be hosting an impromptu (but very stimulating conversation) with visiting scholar Dr. Omar Dahi. In Girvetz Hall 2320. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Attached here you'll find selected very short readings which you might want to skim before you arrive. These will give you insight into Dr. Dahi's range of projects and achievements.  In addition to discussing these pieces, Dahi will give us a preview of his Carnegie Endowment project website, and its transregional collaborative approach to Critical Security Studies research and publishing. And he will brief us on the web-based collaborations that Jadaliyya.com, MERIP, and the Arab Council of the Social Sciences are building with Africa and Latin America. Prof. Amar and Prof. Dahi invite you to share your interest in security studies, conflict studies, or comparative research in and around the Middle East. Omar will help us think about grant writing, both collectively and as individuals.

Background:
Prof. Paul Amar, Director of the Orfalea Center for Global & International Studies would like to invite you (graduate students) to a very special conversation with a visiting expert in grant writing, researching, and transnational collaboration. Prof. Omar Dahi is a Syrian-American Economist, Ethnographer, and Activist. He is a founding editor of Jadaliyya.com, leader of the Arab Council of the Social Sciences, founder of the Beirut School of Critical Security Studies, and primary investigator of a major global research initiative in Critical Security Studies funded by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
