TRENDS Research & Advisory, together with the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR) at King’s College London, and the Orfalea Centre of the University of California, Santa Barbara, are organising a conference on 6-7 December at King’s College, London.

The theme of the conference is the Constructions of Terrorism: Reconciling Human Rights, Human Security in Countering Terrorism. This is the third conference in the Constructions of Terrorism project.

This conference will explore key issues being faced in countering extremism and terrorism, such as -

  • The dilemmas faced by states in providing security for society and individuals while ensuring efforts are directed at preventing terrorist attacks;
  • Military and legal strategies for responding to terrorism at home and abroad and the consequences these may have for security at home and the wider world;
  • Strategies for dealing with extremism in society and how to ensure security measures do not increase fear or contribute to extremist agendas;
  • Strategies for preventing extremism in society and how to deal with groups/individuals that espouse and support violence and extremist objectives.
